Beyond Academics
Human Touch Features for Students That Extend Beyond Academics
Academics. Most of our current school system revolves around academics and yet, this approach actually falls short of what our kids need to be prepared for as they progress in school and in life. Most current school content is simply memorized, spewed out for an exam and then quickly forgotten. But beyond that, there’s often only one right answer, which frequently cultivates in our students a fear of failure. An excessive amount of kids pass through too many years of their young years feeling like they do not measure up, or do not see the value of why they are in school, except to be with friends. This disconnect alters a student’s trajectory into adulthood. This approach of controlled learning suggests that all that matters in school is good grades, rather than actual learning and a multitude of accomplishments.
Furthermore, kids come to realize that being “academic” doesn’t tell you much about who they are. It doesn’t indicate whether or not they’ll be successful in life or what learning interests them or in which areas they excel. Students have many talents; often they just don’t fit in the current prescribed curriculum because their talents are likely not considered “real knowledge.” Human Touch is offering each student a personalized opportunity to master core standards in language and math, but also understand important facts of life and how those facts relate to his/her life.
