Thriving with Autism!

Accelerating Young Minds is thrilled and honored to be the sponsor of Carlee’s World, a blog about a teenage girl thriving in the world of Autism! Carlee lives in the Midwest and is excited to share her story, life experiences, struggles, successes and coping advice to fellow children on the spectrum. Carlee will also provide reviews of our ASD E-learning activities to address the benefits of AYM for children on the spectrum. Have fun and enjoy Carlee’s World!

Hi! I’m Carlee and this is my first post! When I was three years old I was diagnosed with Aspergers, which is technically not a thing anymore. It is now referred to as Autistic Spectrum Disorder and over the years I’ve learned how to cope with it. I guess this blog is sort of a guide and learning opportunity for kids like me. I might share stories, coping mechanisms, and just general advice.

This year I’ll be starting my first year of high school, but I’m not nervous. The idea of growing up sounds rather exciting to me and I can’t wait to gain more freedom as I get older. If I was the same person I was a year ago, the thought of high school would have probably made me go full on panic attack. But over the span of 8th grade, I have learned a lot about myself and the world around me.

I want to share my stories through a series of blog posts. I’m very excited and thankful for this opportunity. To be honest, I was supposed to make a video to be posted on a YouTube channel, but the idea freaked me out a bit. I never realized how hard it would be to talk to a camera, the situation made me uncomfortable. I will continue to practice in order to build up the skill and experience, but as for now, I apologize for this lame alternative. I’ve always wanted to be a blogger though, I love writing! I’m even trying to start a fashion blog with my friend at the moment.

This whole thing started with my mother, really. A company she is familiar with, Accelerating Young Minds, had a job proposition for me. They run this amazing website for kids on the autistic spectrum. It involves playing through levels to learn about colors, letters, and other things. I’m planning on doing gameplay of the levels at a later time, so stay tuned. I think that about wraps it all up, I’ve never written in this style, I’m not too confident in it, but I’ll try to improve as I go!

Thanks for reading, Carlee
